Final Cut Pro 3 is really good. What is better about FCP-4? It seems the time may be right to be FCP-3 from someone who wants FCP-4, the price may be reallll good.

Well, I've been taking a once a week class on FCP-3 for the past few months, and last night the instructor practically spasmed talking about FCP-4.

He had just returned to NAB in Vegas and saw the "show" on FCP-4. It's pretty impressive. The most impressive feature to me is the new codec's that will used.

FCP-4 will allow for 8 bit and 10 bit uncompressed video editing! BetaCam SP and Digi-Beta can now be firewired in with allegedly no degradation of the signal at all!

I was told that if you buy your FCP 3 after April 6th, you can upgrade to FCP-4 for only $49.95, and of course you'll get both disks for practically the price of one once FCP-4 is released.

I may do a full report on FCP-4 on my Super-8 forum. FCP-4 has approximately 300-350 upgrades over FCP-3.

Allegedly FCP-4 is due out sometime in June.

I'm not a big fan of beta. If I'm not shooting on film I still think mini dv is the way to go.

We were shooting a music video in school. The main narritive part was shot on D9 and I shot the bands performance on my canon xm2. For some reason (newer lens, progressive scan?) my stuff came out tons better. We've had similar expeiriences with beta.

Also to go in to FCP4 from beta you'd need a beta deck would'nt you? And who can afford that?

I'm more excited about reduced render times, the soundtrack compostion tool, and the ability to create your own fonts for titles...

June is a long time to wait.

You may like mini-dv better than BetaCam SP, but it isn't better. Mini dv is horrible at detailing resolution when it comes to people's hair, especially dark hair.

It's a fine format with many useful purposes but it is a 4:1:1 sampling format, and BetaCam SP is a 4:2:2 sampling format.

Yes the video decks are expensive, but the decks last forever. I own a few BetaCam SP's and one of my decks was purchased almost 10 years ago and I still haven't replaced the video head in it.

The BetaCam SP decks amortize their value amazingly well over the long haul.

The Final Cut Pro people have their hands full explaining how if the codecs in Final Cut Pro 4 are so much better than FCP 3, than how could FCP 3 have been called lossless?

Unless Final Pro Cut 3 was perfect and Final Cut Pro 4 will be perfecter. [img]tongue.gif[/img]

I'm aware of the sampling rates and what not, but in my opinon Beta makes everything look like a soap opera and I really hate that. Fair play if you can afford to shell out 40 grand on a beta deck, but I'd rather spend it on my movie my friend.

Hey Machead. Yeah I got my mac and it works like a dream. The nice people at Apple are giving me FCP3 tomorrow and when 4 comes out in the summer they'll upgrade me for free!

I'm cutting about 5 projects at the mo, and I can honestly say my workflow has never been better!

Perhaps we have been at cross purposes...

I agree that film looks like film on beta. Thats what all our films are telecinied to. I was talking about shooting beta when I mentioned the "soap opera" look.

Ie I'd rather SHOOT DV than beta. Obviously for editing I'd rather have my master on beta sp. Perhaps we are in agreement afterall?
